The National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) at University of California San Francisco (UCSF) immerses clinician scholars in a rigorous, two-year program of research, policy, and leadership training. This training equips scholars to partner with communities and health systems, engage and lead diverse teams to impact health policy, and generate and use evidence that will inform new strategies and models of care that improve health and health care for all.
The Maureen McGrath Fellowship in Nursing for National Clinician Scholars fully supports a doctorally-trained nurse Scholarinterested in the prevention or treatment of diabetes mellitus. Scholars are embedded within UCSF’s multidisciplinary National Clinician Scholars Program and have access to the rich mentorship of UCSF’s diverse faculty. The Scholar also has access to an array of formal coursework to support the development of rigorous research skills.
RNs with a doctoral degree (PhD or DNP)

In completion of the clinical requirements allowing for independent clinical work by the date of entry into the program
In completion of a doctoral degree (PhD or DNP) by the program start date, July 1, 2027. For RN applicants completing a PhD, the dissertation must be successfully defended and accepted by the university before July 1.
Within 5 years of having completed the doctoral degree (in other words, to be eligible to apply for the 2027-2029 NCSP cohort, applicants must have completed their doctoral degree in the year 2021 or later)
The National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) at UCSF offers nurses and physicians an innovative two-year, postdoctoral interprofessional fellowship in health services research that prepares clinician scientists for a wide range of careers.
Based at UCSF’s Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, NCSP at UCSF is a partnership between UCSF’s Schools of Medicine and Nursing. Scholars train in a closely-knit cohort, receive mentorship from faculty from different disciplines, and build their skills in community-partnered research, implementation and dissemination sciences, healthy policy, leadership, and health system transformation.
