Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Must possess and maintain all required licensures and certifications for continued employment. Preference: Board certification/board eligible Physiatrist. Interest and experience in advanced Pain Medicine Rehabilitation including Complex Spasticity Management and Concussion Pain Management, as well as some related VHA Opioid Pain Management. Completion of a Pain fellowship with specialty board certification. Possess excellent General Physiatrist or Anesthesiologist evaluation and management skills as well a strong partner. Provide comprehensive evaluation and management of complex Pain Management including both medication management, advanced fluro guided injection, intrathecal pain pump evaluation and management, Pain Ketamine infusions etc. Provide fluoro guided spine joint injections and other intramuscular injections as indicated to facilitate the rehabilitation process. Effectively evaluate patients with history of recent and remote pain syndromes and provide treatment for common manifestations of Pain Syndrome such as headache and insomnia, musculoskeletal pain. Write sound VHA Safe Narcotic guided prescriptions for required syndromes, safe drug holidays, etc. Effectively provides diagnostic evaluation, examination, and interdisciplinary treatment planning to meet complex Pain and general musculoskeletal rehabilitative needs of Veterans. Serve as a medical provider of the Pain rehabilitation team participating in continued readiness for our continued Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) as well as ongoing monitoring of outcome trends including but not limited to Pain goals, functional outcomes, and efficiencies of obtaining functional goals. Confidently and professionally collaborates with a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team of Pain providers including, APRN/RNs, psychologists, social workers, other physicians, nurses, etc. to meet a patient's complex Pain Medicine rehabilitative needs. Fulfil the educational mission of VA by providing bedside and didactic teaching for students, residents, and fellows.
