SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Responsible for managing regional wide Risk Management and Patient Safety Departments. Engages as an integral part of providing safe, quality care to our patients and continually improving the care throughout the Penn State Health system. Collaborates with leaders of Quality and Patient Safety, department and system leaders to achieve goal of increasing quality and patient safety and decreasing harm to patients. Oversees comprehensive evaluation, investigation, reporting and remediation with all associated regulatory agencies. Functions as Patient Safety Officer for assigned locations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES- The percentage of time spent performing essential functions is 95%. Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
Plan, organize, and manage the work of Patient Safety and Risk Management team members to ensure that work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements.
Responsible for hiring, performance management, performance appraisals and pay reviews for staff members.
Monitor operations to ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures and government regulations.
Collaborates with leadership to keep them advised of current risk and patient safety concerns, contributes to the design and development of Risk and Patient Safety programs in coordination with Quality director and platform leadership.
Works collaboratively with Performance Improvement, Infection Prevention, Regulatory and Peer Review departments to assure compliance with related healthcare regulations.
Assures confidentiality of information coming into and disseminated from the Patient Safety/Risk department.
Responsible for overall patient safety/risk management program, including prevention and loss control, in addition to non-litigated matters of a risk related nature. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations for risk and patient safety matters, acts as internal contact person for risk issues.
Acts as Patient Safety Officer for assigned locations, is responsible for the compliance with all Act 13 regulations, including high level trending of patient safety events, reporting to the Patient Safety Committee and platform leadership and timely identification of safety events that require written notification to patients. Participates in continuing education programs to expand knowledge and maintain expertise.
Provides education to staff and providers as needed.
Provides leadership and direction in the modification of existing practices and policies or the creation of new practices and policies in order to reduce exposure.
Collaborates with finance to resolve billing issues related to quality of care patient complaints and/or potentially compensable events.
Oversees the identification and review of potential Sentinel Events and required analysis and action planning.
Works collaboratively with Legal and Risk Insurance as needed.
Facilitates Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and collaborates with patient care staff to develop actions plans and follow-up.
Continuously evaluates events and identifies trends for action planning.
Conducts case findings for Patient Safety and Risk Management
Bachelor's degree in healthcare related field required.
Three (3) years of related experience required.
Previous risk management experience required.
Prior leadership experience required.
Certification in Risk Management or Patient Safety within three (3) years of hire or transfer required.
