The Pharmacy Technician is located within the Pharmacy Department at the VA Western Colorado Health Care System and functions encompass a broad range of technical, social, and problem solving skills. Assignments are diverse in nature and range over many essentially different functions including the outpatient and inpatient sections of Pharmacy service requiring a high degree of experience and adaptability. Major Duties: Interacts with facility personnel and our Veteran customers in a professional manner that promotes proper rapport and insures the highest level of customer service and patient care. Recognizes and solve problems, makes recommendations to avoid potential problems, and refers appropriate concerns to Lead Technician/Procurement Technician or supervising Pharmacist. Uses knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management to receive and inventory pharmacy stock, relay inventory information to the Lead Technician/Procurement Technician, and to obtain additional medication and supplies from our prime vendor when Lead Technician/Procurement Technician is unavailable. Is expected to protect patient sensitive information, electronic and print in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974, Federal Regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Operates and care for automated Pharmacy equipment; specifically, the Omnicell, ScriptPro, and UNIT DOSE pre-packing machines. Accurately compounds medications for inpatient and outpatient use following written instructions and using proper aseptic technique without a second review. Conducts monthly ward and clinic inspection per VAMC policies and procedures. Replaces outdated drugs in all patient care areas. Inspects all emergency carts in the facility replacing any outdated or short dated drugs. Is aware of general drug therapy guidelines such as duplicate therapy (e.g.: checks to ensure inpatients on enoxaparin are not also on heparin drip.) Uses extensive knowledge of drug and medication brand and generic names; general and specific storage requirements; expiration date requirements; dosage forms; pharmaceutical weights and measures; medical terminology; and the computerized prescription process to accurately process prescription and medication requests in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Communicates with facility personnel regarding drug distribution. Monitors all Pharmacy refrigerator and freezer temperatures. Receives and inventories drug stock from prime vendor including controlled substances. Work Schedule: M-F, 8:00 am-4:30pm Financial Disclosure Report: Not required
